The
supervisors are present at all times and plan much of the therapy.
The therapy consists of both group and individual work to meet specific
needs of each person. We have been very pleased with this
type of intensive therapy program and find that all of our stutterers
are able to successfully manage their communication upon completion
of therapy. We do not advocate a cure for stuttering, but
our emphasis, which may be considered a "modification of stuttering
symptoms approach," is designed to assist the stutterer in
learning to successfully manage and control the stuttering.
We devote a considerable amount of time to the reduction and elimination
of word and situation fears, to improving the stutterers' self image
by participating in many out-side speaking situations which include
talking on the telephone, talking to groups and classes, and talking
to clerks, strangers, and in other situations. Considerable
time is also devoted to identification and evaluation of the individual's
outward stuttering pattern. This is followed by teaching the
stutterer to handle and control the stuttering; whereas, previously,
the stuttering controlled him/her. We also establish a maintenance,
follow-up program to assist the stutterer in maintaining improvement.
We are very pleased with the lasting results of the stuttering workshop,
which has been conducted for the past 35 years.
