For Adolescent and Adult Stutterers
Janice is native Alaskan and did not have therapy available to her. Her stuttering had an effect on all aspects of her life. She has made some major lifestyle changes.
Prior to therapy, Travis would frequently not attempt to talk. Many times his stuttering blocks would be so long and frustrating that he would give up on what he wanted to say.
Max was largely a covert stutterer with a fair amount of fluent speech. He would rate his stuttering problem as severe as most other stutterers as he had to devote so much effort to attempting to hide and avoid his stuttering.
As a young adult, Dmitriy manages his stuttering very well, does not avoid any speaking situations, has greatly reduced his fears, and has a healthy self image.
The procedures and techniques used in the SSMP can easily be adapted to the child stutterer. With early intervention, the word and situation fears, the avoidance behaviors, and the self image issues can be kept to a minimum or prevented from developing.
Dr. Dorvan H. Breitenfeldt's passion has always been to improve the quality of stutterers’ lives and to develop qualified clinicians for the treatment of stuttering. He is co-author of the SSMP – and a stutterer himself.
